Ask Jackie: Unexpected Blessings

Siblings of children with special needs

special needs siblingsWhen I was listening to the Talk of the Nation’s recent conversation about siblings with special needs, I naturally thought of Peyton and Colin. Of course, questions started circling.

  • Will they grow up to resent Dillon?
  • Will they resent us?
  • Are they getting the support they need?
  • Will they help take care of Dillon when we’re gone?
  • And are they going to view that responsibility as a burden rather than a blessing?

These concerns, and so many others, weigh heavy on my heart.

Please read the transcript or listen to the episode from NPR’s Talk of the Nation. The link below will take you to their page where you can read or listen to it. The interview addresses the challenges that siblings of children with intellectual disabilities face today. Then, if you’re so inclined, share it with others. I can not stress enough the overwhelming need for Christian support for siblings, families and the caregivers.

I pray that they receive it sooner rather than later.
