SME 2010 Draws to a Close

Belle Plaine, MN—Our Summer Ministry Experience (SME) is ending for another year. Throughout the summer, 7 students traveled the Midwest, working with our locations and Jesus Cares Ministries while another student served as a Chaplain’s assistant at The Lutheran Home Campus in Belle Plaine. One SME participant shares her thoughts about her experience:

“This internship has really given all of us the opportunity to share in The Lutheran Home Association’s ministry and God’s Word with so many people—not only with those people with disabilities that we work with, but also with the caretakers, the host families we stay with, and even complete strangers in the most random circumstances.

“One day we decided to go to the beach and relax.  Even on this day off, we were able to witness for Jesus Cares Ministries.  While on the beach, a group home came and their caretakers were surprised that we talked to them without fear and were so open and accepting.  We then were given the opportunity to explain what we do and were able to invite them to our future events.  It just shows that anywhere you go, you are representing what you do, and this was the perfect example of that.

“Some people may think that it’s not worth the effort trying to share the Gospel with people with disabilities, but that is definitely not true.  We have souls, and so do they, and all of our souls need to be nourished by the Word of God.  The fact is, I know we are making a difference. …We worked with one person with disabilities who didn’t talk to us at all—not before the Bible story, during craft time or during the lesson—but when the pastor asked a question about the Bible study, all of a sudden this person spoke up with the correct answer.  He surprised us all because we weren’t sure if he could understand what was going on. … We could see when he spoke and answered God was using our efforts were making a difference in strengthening his faith, and that he knew who his Savior was; he knew who Jesus was.”

God does marvelous things through His Word. We are thankful for those who support the Summer Ministry Experience so college students have the opportunity to share the Gospel! This program is funded entirely by donations.
