The best part of our camp for people with special needs is seeing the volunteers and campers having a ball, getting excited about coming again and knowing it is really all about believing in and sharing the love of Jesus.
Each fall, our Jesus Cares Ministries (JCM) and the Minnesota District Special Ministries partner to conduct two Joy in Jesus retreats for people with developmental disabilities. One retreat is held at Camp Omega near Waterville, Minn. and the other at Green Lake Bible Camp near Spicer, Minn.
This year’s theme of the Joy in Jesus camps was from Philippians: “Shine like stars as you hold out the word of life.”
Each camp includes a variety of activities such as sitting by the campfire, floating around the lake on a pontoon, hiking, exploring and playing games. Campers can reunite with friends they met previous years and meet new friends. Camp participants aren’t the only ones who look forward to camp. Camp staff are volunteers who often come back year after year.
“As the weekend went on, I could see our theme come to life,” said Julie Luetke, program coordinator at Jesus Cares Ministries and The Lutheran Home Association. “Both campers and volunteers were like stars, shining brightly the love of Jesus.”
We thank all the volunteers who generously share their time and talents to make a memorable experience for the campers so everyone can share their “Joy in Jesus”!
Joy in Jesus retreats are run by the WELS Minnesota District Special Ministries Committee and Jesus Cares Ministries of The Lutheran Home Association in Belle Plaine.
